A PILOT STUDY FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS IN THE CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIE, MI JOEL G FALLON School of Science and Natural ResouTces Lake Superior State University Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 Abstract In the spring of 1995, I was given the opportunity to participate in a mapping study of multiple sclerosis with the Chippewa County Health Department for Sault Ste. Marie, MI. This project was being done because of a suspected pattern in the distribution of MS within the city. Information about persons that have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis was obtained, and the location of their dwelling was mapped using Global Positioning System (GPS). This information was then plotted onto a map dividing the city into eleven neighborhoods giving a graphical representation of the distribution of MS. Prevalence values were calculated for each of the eleven sample areas. This data was then tested, using a Generalized Runs Test to determine if a spatial correlation existed in the neighborhood sample areas. It was found that a correlation did not exist.
